To be honest, a stamped concrete driveway would not be my first choice. This is mostly due to the fact that it is always possible for it to crack.
There is, however, another explanation.
You're probably considering this choice since you've seen some lovely designs that seem like a stone. The issue is that to assist avoid cracking, building joints must be utilized. These are lines that run over the pavement and generally mess up the beautiful stone design. They're lengthy lines that, unless they're concealed, are highly noticeable and stick out.
However, one reason you could consider this is cost. You may not want a simple driveway, such as asphalt, and stamped concrete allows you to put patterns in the driveway...this is less expensive than, say, an all paver driveway.
1. You may choose from a variety of stamped concrete patterns. I favor geometric ones since the construction joints may be hidden in the design.
2. Designs that resemble bluestone, brick, or other stones with straight contours can be used.
3. To further "authenticate" the stone look, the concrete is frequently tinted.
4. If you used a brick pattern, for example, the hue would most likely be black, similar to genuine brick pavers. Bluestone-like patterns would be lighter and blue/gray in color.
Another beautiful appearance is to avoid using stamped concrete altogether and be a little more imaginative. Add some features to asphalt, loose stone, or tar and chip. The driveway apron might be a paver or granite area at the front of the house. Pavers, granite placed flat, or Belgian block curbing can also be used to edge the driveway.
These concepts are likely to be less expensive than stamped concrete while yet providing a beautiful aesthetic, depending on how deep the details are.
